Hello, Martinis and Your Money Listeners! We have thousands of clients at Financial Gym with numerous life goals they want to accomplish, and our number one employer represented at the Gym is “self-employed” and a common life goal for many clients is the desire to start their own business. So, not only do we work with a number of current business owners, but we also work with a number of budding business owners. So I thought I would take the month of October to talk about business ownership, highlight some client journeys and share the best tips and practices we’ve learned over the last eight years of working with current and future business owners. Joining me today is Jaiden Wood, a long-time Financial Gym client, and co-founder of WoCo Studios. Jaiden joins me today to share his story about why he became a Financial Gym client at 18 and how the work he’s done with the Gym for almost four years now, led him to the freedom and confidence to start his own business.

Podcast Notes

  • Jaiden has been a Financial Gym client for almost for 4 years, he was 18 when he first joined.

  • Jaiden came to New York and was attending Pratt for photography and later communications design. To help pay for school, he was freelancing and realized he needed to better manage his money. This drove him to research financial advice and he eventually found the Financial Gym.

  • Early in his tenure with the Financial Gym, his trainer and Shannon learned of Jaiden’s talent for design. Shannon is a proponent of giving the Gym’s clients business as well; this began the reciprocal relationship between the two.

  • Jaiden was a junior in college when through a friend, he found his first full time job in his field of expertise. He was still going to school full time and freelanced on this side. He just left this company about a month ago.

  • He’s decided to take his freelancing full time, so he took on a partner and started WoCo Studios.

  • Jaiden found a business partner in his college roommate, McKayla. They had shared many of the same classes but had different expertise. Both of them were seeing the disadvantages of working for someone else and were on the same page in their interest in the freedom of working for themselves.

  • Between the two partners, they’re able to offer their clientele services from design and content to marketing and branding; and everything in between.

  • Jaiden’s work ethic is rooted in showing up professionally, aggressively and creatively sourcing the work, looking out and being ready for opportunities.

  • Jaiden is hoping to expand WoCo’s clientele in the cosmetic, wellness and marijuana dispensary industries.

Takeaway: My biggest takeaway is that being a business owner requires a significant amount of networking to grow a business and the best thing you can do before and during your process of building a business is create a strong and trustworthy work ethic. Word of mouth is your cheapest and best marketing tool and nothing will give you more word of mouth than taking great care of your clients.
